A season of shifting franchises and the end of NFL dynasties
In short: The 1996 NFL season was defined by chaos and transition. From a legal settlement that split the Cleveland Browns' identity between two cities to the sudden rise of expansion teams, the league's landscape was fundamentally reshaped, signaling the end of an era for several historic powerhouses.
The 1996 season was marked by a unique legal settlement following Art Modell's controversial decision to relocate the Cleveland Browns. To resolve the public outcry, the league decreed that the Browns' name, colors, and history would remain in Cleveland, while the players and personnel transferred to form the Baltimore Ravens. This left the Browns officially deactivated for three seasons, from 1996 through 1998, until the franchise could return to Cleveland.
Beyond the relocation, the season signaled a tectonic shift in the league's hierarchy. It was the first time since 1991 that neither the Dallas Cowboys nor the San Francisco 49ers reached the NFC Championship Game, effectively ending the dominance of those established dynasties. This era of change was further highlighted by the rapid success of expansion teams; in only their second year of existence, the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars both advanced to their respective conference championship games.
The season also faced off-field turbulence, including a high-profile tampering investigation. Following rumors that New England Patriots coach Bill Parcells was negotiating with the New York Jets, the league awarded the Patriots multiple draft picks as compensation. Super Bowl XXXI marked the season's end, seeing the Green Bay Packers beat the New England Patriots 35–21. The game was decided by a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Desmond Howard, who became the first and only special teams player to be named Super Bowl MVP.
