In short: When Juventus defeated Ajax on penalties in May 1996, it was a classic heavyweight clash. Yet, years later, the triumph was shadowed by allegations of performance-enhancing drugs, sparking legal battles that questioned the very integrity of the victory.

The 1996 UEFA Champions League final, held on 22 May 1996, featured a rematch of the 1973 final between the defending champions, Ajax, and the Italian side Juventus. The match was a tense affair that remained 1–1 through extra time. Juventus secured their second title by winning the penalty shoot-out 4–2, after all four of their takers—Ciro Ferrara, Gianluca Pessotto, Michele Padovano, and Vladimir Jugović—successfully converted their shots. For Ajax, Edgar Davids saw his initial penalty saved by goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi.

While the match was a sporting spectacle, it later became the center of a doping scandal. Allegations surfaced that Juventus players had used erythropoietin (EPO) to enhance performance. In 2004, club doctor Riccardo Agricola was sentenced to 22 months in prison for sporting fraud, with claims that he provided EPO to players between 1994 and 1998. A leading hematologist testified that it was "practically certain" that Antonio Conte and Alessio Tacchinardi had used the substance, and "very probable" that seven other players had received small doses.

The legal saga concluded with a complex verdict. In 2007, Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation overturned the responsibility of the club, noting that the evidence was based on probability rather than certainty. The court found no ascertained positive cases of doping and noted that the players' hematological values did not exceed established anti-doping limits or differ significantly from the national average. Despite the acquittal, the era remains one of the most debated periods in the club's history.
