How a turbulent season ended in historic silverware for Arsenal
In short: The 2019–20 season was one of the most volatile in Arsenal's modern history. Despite a disastrous Premier League campaign and a mid-season managerial overhaul, the club managed to secure its fourteenth FA Cup title, providing a silver lining to a year defined by instability.
The campaign began with high ambitions and significant investment, including club-record signing Nicolas Pepe and the arrival of Gabriel Martinelli. However, the summer transfer window sparked intense protests from fans against owner Stan Kroenke, using the hashtag WeCareDoYou to signal dissatisfaction with perceived lack of ambition. While the club started the Premier League season strongly, sitting third at the October international break, performance levels rapidly declined. New arrivals also included defenders Kieran Tierney and David Luiz, alongside midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan. The squad also saw the departure of several players, including Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck.
This decline led to the sacking of head coach Unai Emery on 29 November 2019. He was briefly replaced by caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg before Mikel Arteta took charge on 20 December 2019. Under Arteta, the club saw some improvement, including a 2–0 victory against Manchester United, but the season remained difficult. Arteta's initial squad reinforcements included loan signings Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares. The team also maintained a presence in the Europa League, though they were eliminated by Olympiacos on away goals.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced a suspension of all competitions from March until 17 June 2020. Upon resumption, further defeats condemned Arsenal to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League, their worst points return over a 38-game season. They redeemed themselves during the FA Cup, overcoming Sheffield United and Manchester City to enter the final; there, a 2–1 victory over Chelsea on 1 August 2020 secured their fourteenth trophy. The club's kit was supplied by Adidas, returning to the brand for the first time since 1993. Additionally, the team's primary commercial partners included Emirates and Visit Rwanda.
