In short: In the 2019–20 season, FC Barcelona faced a period of profound instability. Between heavy transfer spends, managerial shifts, and a devastating European defeat, the club endured its first trophy drought in over a decade, signaling a turbulent era for the Catalan giants.

The 201<0xC2>9–20 campaign was marked by significant upheaval both on and off the pitch. After 89 consecutive seasons in the Spanish top flight, the club entered its 120th season facing a period of transition. The summer of 2019 saw heavy movement in the transfer market, including the €120,000,000 signing of Antoine Griezmann from Atlético Madrid and the €45,000,000 acquisition of Malcom from Zenit St Petersburg. However, these investments did not translate to silverware, as the club went trophyless for the first time since the 2007–08 season.

The managerial seat was equally unstable. Ernesto Valverde, who had led the team for two and a half seasons, saw his contract terminated on 13 January 2020 following a 3–2 Supercopa de España defeat to Atlético Madrid. He was replaced by Quique Setién, but the change failed to arrest the decline. While the team saw flashes of brilliance—including a seven-game winning streak in late October and two hat-tracks from Lionel Messi in November and December—the season was defined by inconsistency.

The season's low point arrived in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, where Barcelona suffered a crushing 8–2 defeat against Bayern Munich. This loss, coupled with losing the La Liga title race to Real Madrid, underscored the club's struggle to maintain its elite status. Amidst the footballing decline, the club also faced internal shifts, such as the resignation of Vice President of Sports Jordi Mestre in July 2019.

Despite the struggles, the season provided historic individual moments. Ansu Fati became the youngest player in the club's La Liga history to score at 16 years and 304 days, and later became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Champions League competition. Yet, these milestones could not mask a season of unprecedented difficulty for the Blaugrana.
