In short: The 2019–20 La Liga season was meant to be a standard pursuit of glory. Instead, it became a historic battle against uncertainty, shifting from a scheduled May conclusion to a high-stakes summer sprint that saw Real Madrid claim a record-breaking title.

The 89th edition of Spain's top flight, known for sponsorship reasons as LaLiga Santander, began on 16 August 2019. While Barcelona entered the season as the two-time defending champions—having secured their 26th title the previous year—the campaign was fundamentally altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. On 12 March 2020, the league suspended operations for at least two weeks, eventually moving to an indefinite suspension on 23 March.

The resumption of the season in June 2020 turned the competition into a relentless daily marathon. From 11 June until 13 July, matches were played every single day. This intense schedule culminated in a frantic final stretch: the penultimate round took place on 16 July, and the final matches were held on 19 July. In that penultimate round, Real Madrid secured their 34th league title following a 2–1 victory over Villarreal.

The season also marked a significant shift in commercial landscape, as Puma ended a 23-year partnership with Nike to become the official match ball manufacturer. While the competition featured 20 teams—including newcomers Osasuna, Granada, and Mallorca—the unique circumstances of the pandemic meant that any matches played behind closed doors were excluded from the official league table.

The season's scoring milestones were bookended by Aritz Aduriz, who scored the first goal for Athletic Bilbao against Barcelona, and Coke, who scored the final goal for Levante against Getafe on 19 July 2020.
