How a global pandemic disrupted Manchester City's quest for European glory
In short: Entering the 2019–20 season as unprecedented holders of all four domestic trophies, Manchester City faced a season of extreme volatility. From a historic pursuit of a European title to legal battles with UEFA and a global lockdown, the campaign was defined by unprecedented disruption and record-breaking individual feats.
The 2019–20 season was a period of immense transition and external chaos for the Citizens. After winning both the Premier League and FA Cup the previous year, the club entered the campaign as defending champions across all four domestic competitions. However, the season was fundamentally altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following a suspension of elite sport in the UK in March 2020, the domestic season was extended indefinitely, eventually resuming on 17 June 2020 with matches played in empty stadiums.
On the pitch, the team faced significant hurdles. Injuries to key players like Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sané impacted defensive stability, contributing to a high number of dropped points; by the end of December 2019, City had lost 19 league points, exceeding their total from the previous two seasons combined. Despite this, the squad achieved remarkable milestones, such as becoming the first top European team to score 100 goals in all competitions by beating Fulham 4–0 on 26 January 2020.
The campaign was also shadowed by legal tension. In February 2020, UEFA announced its intention to ban the club from European competitions for two seasons due to alleged Financial Fair Play breaches. After an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the ban was overturned on 13 July 2020. Ultimately, while City finished as Premier League runners-up to Liverpool, the season saw Kevin De Bruyne earn Premier League Player of the Season honors, having matched Thierry Henry's 2002–03 record of 20 assists.
The season also marked the end of an era for David Silva. His final appearance, a Champions League quarter-final loss to Lyon on 15 August 2020, was his 436th for the club, making him one of the most decorated players in their history with fourteen winner's medals.
