How a 24-point deficit transformed into a Super Bowl championship
In short: In the 2019 postseason, the Kansas City Chiefs faced a 24–0 deficit against the Houston Texans. Instead of folding, they orchestrated a historic comeback, setting a new record for consecutive touchdowns and securing their first championship since 1970.
The 2019 Kansas City Chiefs season was defined by high-stakes resilience and offensive dominance. After a shaky start to the regular season with a 1–3 home record, the team found rhythm on the road, starting 4–0. This momentum carried them through the AFC West, where they clinched their fourth consecutive division title and secured the No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
The defining moment of the season occurred in the AFC Divisional round against the Houston Texans. After trailing 24–0 during the second quarter, the Chiefs became the first NFL side to overcome a 20-point halftime deficit to hold a lead by the interval. By netting 28 points during the second quarter's final 10 minutes, they established a new franchise postseason total of 51 points.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was central to this resurgence, tying an NFL postseason record by throwing four touchdown passes in a single game. His performance, alongside tight end Travis Kelce and running back Damien Williams, propelled the team through the AFC Championship against the Tennessee Titans and into Super Bowl LIV. In that final matchup, the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20, marking their first Super Bowl victory since 1970.
The season also highlighted the rising star power within the roster. Mahomes was ranked 4th in the NFL Network's Top 100 players countdown, the highest ranking ever for a Chiefs player. The team's depth was evident as they featured six players in that same countdown, tying for the second-most in the league.
