In short: In 2020, the NBA draft broke a 45-year tradition. Forced by a global pandemic, the league abandoned its June schedule and its iconic green room, replacing physical gatherings with videoconferencing and remote workouts to find the next generation of stars.

The 2020 NBA draft, the 74th edition of the event, was a historical anomaly. Originally slated for June 25 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a massive postponement. The draft was eventually held on November 18, 2020, via videoconferting from ESPN's facilities in Bristol, Connecticut. This marked the first time since 1975 that the draft was not held in June, and the first time it ever took place later than June.

The disruption extended to the draft lottery and the scouting process. The lottery, originally planned for May 19, was rescheduled to August 20, 2020. Because of the 'NBA Bubble' and pandemic restrictions, the traditional 'green room'—where players wait with families to hear their names—was absent. Even the NBA Draft Combine was transformed into a multi-phase, remote operation. From late September to mid-November, players conducted interviews via video and performed individual on-court programs at facilities near their homes rather than at a single centralized location.

Despite the logistical hurdles, the talent pool remained deep. The Minnesota Timberwolves secured the first overall pick, selecting Anthony Edwards from Georgia. The draft featured notable international prospects like LaMelo Ball and R. J. Hampton, as well as several players from overseas and Canadian academies. While the mechanics of scouting changed—using tools like the HomeCourt mobile app for 'Pro Day' videos—the fundamental goal of the draft remained: identifying the elite talent that would shape the league's future.
