The Kansas City Chiefs' historic pursuit of a second consecutive championship
In short: Entering 2020 as defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs faced a season of unprecedented records and immense pressure. From securing the largest contract in American sports history to navigating a pandemic-altered stadium, the team fought to maintain their dominance in a year that redefined franchise milestones.
The 2020 season was a landmark year for the Kansas City Chiefs, marking their eighth season under head coach Andy Reid. The team entered the year as the defending Super Bowl LIV champions and successfully secured their fifth consecutive AFC West title. They achieved a league-leading 14–2 record, which stood as the best in franchise history until the 2024 season. This campaign also marked the franchise's 51st season in the NFL and their 61st overall. Additionally, the squad managed to tie a franchise record by qualifying for the playoffs for six straight years.
By achieving an 8–0 road record during the regular season, they joined the 2016 New England Patriots as the only other team to do so. The team also became the first in NFL history to open four consecutive seasons with a 4–0 start. Despite this dominance, the season ended in Super Bowl LV, where they lost 31–9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This remarkable run included a 12-game winning streak that spanned both the regular season and the postseason. Furthermore, the team clinched home-field advantage for the playoffs following a victory against the Atlanta Falcons.
The season was also shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the team to play with a stadium capacity of only about 22%, or roughly 16,000 fans. Due to health protocols, spectators were required to wear face coverings when not consuming food or drinks. Furthermore, the team's preseason schedule was eventually cancelled because of the global pandemic.
