The first time an AFL Grand Final left Melbourne
In short: Imagine a national sport forced into nomadic exile. Due to pandemic-era border closures, the 2020 AFL season saw clubs relocated to quarantine hubs across Australia, culminating in a historic Grand Final played outside Victoria for the very first time.
The 2020 AFL season was defined by unprecedented logistical upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. After being suspended for over two months following Round 1, the league resumed on June 11 with a shortened 17-game home-and-away fixture. Because interstate travel restrictions and mandatory 14-day quarantines made traditional travel impossible, South East Queensland became the season's critical sanctuary. Almost half of all matches were played there, as it remained one of the few regions with favorable quarantine arrangements.
The league implemented a complex system of 'quarantine hubs.' For example, after Round 5, all ten Victorian clubs were relocated: six moved to South East Queensland and four to New South Wales. Other states saw unique arrangements; Western Australia and Tasmania maintained some of the tightest restrictions, leading to three separate three-week quarantine hubs in Perth to facilitate interstate play. Even the Northern Territory hosted three games as teams traveled from Queensland.
These disruptions reached a climax during the finals series. Border controls precluded any finals from being held in Victoria or New South Wales. Consequently, the 2020 Grand Final was scheduled for October 24 at the Gabba in Brisbane. This marked a major shift in tradition: it was the first time the championship was played outside of Melbourne and the first to be held in a night timeslot to avoid a clash with the Cox Plate.
Despite these hurdles, the season saw no confirmed positive cases among players, though several high-profile breaches occurred. These ranged from unauthorized social gatherings to violations of living arrangement protocols, resulting in various fines and suspensions for players and coaching staff alike.
