How a record-breaking basketball tournament unfolded in Sydney
In short: The 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup was more than just a sporting event. Held in Sydney, it shattered attendance records and navigated complex geopolitical shifts, ultimately seeing the United States defend their title in a high-stakes showdown against China.
The 19th edition of the FIBA Women's World Championship took place in Australia between 22 September and 1 October 2022. The tournament was hosted at two venues within the Sydney Olympic Park. It proved to be a landmark event for the sport, attracting a total of 145,519 spectators, which set a new record for attendance.
The path to the finals was marked by significant administrative and political changes. On 1 March 2022, Russia was disqualified following a suspension by FIBA due to the invasion of Ukraine. This led to Puerto Rico being awarded a wildcard replacement on 18 May. Additionally, Nigeria was forced to withdraw in June 2022 because of the political situation in their country, with Mali stepping in as their replacement.
On the court, the United States entered the tournament as the three-time defending champions. They successfully retained their title by defeating China in the final, a match played before 15,895 spectators. The host nation, Australia, secured the bronze medal after a victory over Canada. The tournament's visual identity was deeply rooted in local culture, featuring a logo inspired by Indigenous artwork created by 14-year-old Aboriginal artist Amarlie "Marlii" Briscoe.
The event's preparations began well in advance, with the tournament logo revealed on 10 May 2021, exactly 500 days before the competition. Even the mascot, "Karla the Kangaroo," was introduced a full year before tip-off, on 22 September 2021.
