How the Kansas City Chiefs reclaimed their championship glory in 2022
In short: After trading away star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, the Kansas City Chiefs faced a transformative season. Despite losing their highest-ranked player on the NFL's Top 100 list, the team achieved a franchise-record winning streak and secured their second Super Bowl title in four years.
The 2022 season was a landmark year for the Kansas City Chiefs, marking their 53rd in the NFL and their 10th under head coach Andy Reid. The team achieved a 14–3 regular season record, matching the franchise's all-time win total. This success was punctuated by a streak of ten consecutive winning seasons, a record for the organization.
The season was also defined by tribute and transition. Following the death of former Super Bowl IV MVP Len Dawson on August 24, the team wore a number 16 decal on their helmets to honor his legacy. The team also navigated significant roster changes, including the offseason trade of wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, a player who had been with the franchise since 2016.
The campaign culminated in Super Bowl LVII, where the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles with a score of 38–35. This victory marked the team's third Super Bowl appearance and their second championship win within a four-year span. While the team secured the top seed in the AFC, they notably did not clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs after a loss by the Buffalo Bills to the New England Patriots in Week 17.
Beyond the field, the season held personal significance for the Hunt family. It was the final Super Bowl for Norma Hunt, a minority owner and a member of the 'Never Miss a Super Bowl Club,' who was the widow of founder Lamar Hunt.
