The 2022 Finalissima: A modern revival of a forgotten football crown
In short: When the champions of Europe and South America meet, it is more than a game; it is a clash of continents. The 2022 Finalissima resurrected a dormant tradition to crown the ultimate kings of the pitch, blending decades of history with a new era of cooperation.
The 2022 Finalissima served as the third edition of a match between the winners of the UEFA European Championship and the Copa América. It was the first to be branded as 'Finalissima' (Italian for 'Grand Final'). This specific fixture was a revival of the Artemio Franchi Cup, which was last played in 1993. That earlier tournament was the national team equivalent of the Intercontinental Cup, a club-level trophy contested between the winners of the European Cup and the Copa Libertadores.
The match was born from a renewed partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL. Following a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2020, the two organizations agreed to enhance cooperation, including the staging of intercontinental matches for men, women, and various age groups. The 2022 edition specifically featured Italy, who won UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021, and Argentina, who secured the 2021 Copa América. Argentina ultimately won the match 3–0 to claim their second Finalissima title.
The event took place on June 1, 2022, at Wembley Stadium in London. The venue holds significant historical weight, having hosted the 1966 FIFA World Cup final and the UEFA Euro 1996 final. To mark the occasion, UEFA revealed a logo based on a laurel wreath, featuring ribbons in the colors of both nations—Italy's green, white, and red, and Argentina's white and light blue—interspersed with platinum and gold to symbolize the bonds between the two confederations.
