The 70-point explosion that rewrote the NFL record books
In short: In a single week, the Miami Dolphins achieved a statistical anomaly so profound it became a historical landmark. They didn't just win; they shattered records for yardage and scoring, becoming the first team in history to hit specific milestones in both the passing and rushing games simultaneously.
During Week 3 of the 2023 season, the Miami Dolphins defeated the Denver Broncos 70–20. This performance marked the first time an NFL team had scored 70 points in a game since 1966. The offensive output was staggering, totaling 726 yards—the second-most in league history, trailing only a 1951 mark by the Los Angeles Rams. In a feat of balanced production, they became the first team in NFL history to record both 350 rushing and 350 passing yards in a single game, while also being the first to score five passing and five rushing touchdowns in the same contest.
Despite this historic offensive peak, the season was defined by a series of high-stakes contradictions. The team struggled to overcome winning opponents, managing a mere 1–5 record against teams with winning records. A record-breaking defeat occurred during Week 13 versus the Tennessee Titans; although possessing a 27–13 advantage and a 99.7% likelihood of victory with 4:34 left, they were the initial squad to surrender a margin of 14+ points within the concluding three minutes of regular time.
The season concluded with a playoff appearance that served as a digital milestone. The AFC Wild Card game against the Kansas City Chiefs became the most live-streamed event in U.S. history, accounting for 30% of total internet traffic during the broadcast. However, the Dolphins' drought continued; they lost to the Chiefs in one of the coldest games in NFL history, extending their active playoff victory drought to its longest in the league.
