The only undefeated, untied season in NFL history remains unbroken.
In short: In 1972, the Miami Dolphins achieved a feat of perfection that has eluded every team since. By winning every game, including the postseason, they secured a flawless 17–0 record, becoming the only franchise to lead the league in both scoring offense and scoring defense in the same season.
The Dolphins' journey to perfection was nearly derailed in week 5 when starting quarterback Bob Griese suffered a broken ankle. His replacement, 38-year-old veteran Earl Morrall, stepped in to lead the team through the remainder of the regular season, including a crucial AFC East title clinch in week 10. Griese eventually returned to relieve Morrall in the AFC Championship Game and started Super Bowl VII.
A landmark offensive pairing emerged when running backs Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris jointly surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in one season for the first time as teammates. The offensive line was anchored by future Hall of Famer Jim Langer and Larry Little, while Paul Warfield led the team in receiving. This offensive powerhouse was matched by a defensive unit dubbed the "No-Name Defense" by Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry.
The "No-Name Defense" was led by linebacker Nick Buoniconti, who had previously found success with the Boston Patriots. By leading the NFL in total offence, total defence, scoring offence, and scoring defence simultaneously, the Dolphins attained unmatched dominance. This 17–0 campaign was so dominant that the NFL later ranked them number one on its list of the 100 greatest teams of all time.
While several teams have reached a title game undefeated and untied, such as the 1934 and 1942 Chicago Bears, they all lost the championship. The 1972 Dolphins remain the sole exception to this trend, having won all three of their postseason games to complete their perfect run.
