A season of transition and record-breaking scores for the Las Vegas Raiders
In short: The 2023 Las Vegas Raiders season was defined by massive shifts in leadership and historic offensive outbursts. From the departure of a longtime quarterback to a franchise-record scoring performance, the team navigated a turbulent year that saw them finish with an 8–9 record.
The 2023 campaign marked a significant turning point for the franchise, representing their 54th NFL season and their fourth playing in Las Vegas. The year began under the leadership of head coach and general manager Josh McDaniels alongside Dave Ziegler, but this tandem was dissolved following a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions on October 31. In the wake of these departures, the Raiders turned to interim leadership, appointing linebacker coach Antonio Pierce as head coach and assistant general manager Champ Kelly as interim general manager. Pierce eventually secured the full-time head coaching role after leading the team to a 5–4 finish to close the season.
The roster underwent a major transformation before the season even began. For the first time since 2013, the team entered the season without longtime quarterback Derek Carr, who was released on Valentine's Day. This ushered in a new era, starting with a season opener at Empower Field at Mile High against the Denver Broncos. In that game, newly acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo connected with Jakobi Meyers for a touchdown, helping the Raiders secure a 17–16 victory and making them the only AFC West team to win their season opener.
Offensively, the season reached a historic peak on December 14, 2023. During a 63–21 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders set a new franchise record for most points scored in a single game, surpassing the previous record of 59 points set against the Broncos in 2010. This performance, which saw Aidan O'Connell throw four touchdown passes, was also noted as a scorigami. Even with successes like a Christmas Day victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Raiders missed the playoffs for a second straight year after falling to the Indianapolis Colts.
