A record-breaking season for the 2023 LSU Tigers
In short: In a year defined by individual brilliance and historic statistics, the 2023 LSU Tigers football team reached unprecedented heights. From a Heisman Trophy winner to shattering records in yardage and attendance, the season served as a landmark chapter in Southeastern Conference history.
The 2023 campaign was anchored by the performance of quarterback Jayden Daniels during his tenure under head coach Brian Kelly. In his second year leading the program, Kelly oversaw an offense that allowed Daniels to produce one of the most dominant individual seasons in modern college football. Daniels secured the Heisman Trophy after recording a staggering 50 total touchdowns and nearly 5,000 total yards. The Tigers competed within the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference. This specific season served as a pivotal moment for the program's leadership.
Beyond individual accolades, the team set new benchmarks for efficiency and scale. Daniels established the FBS single-season passer rating record, a testament to his consistency and impact on the field. However, the season was also marked by defensive challenges; it notably saw the most total yards ever surrendered against an LSU football team in the program's history. These statistics highlight a unique duality in their offensive and defensive output. The team faced significant pressure on both sides of the ball.
The atmosphere in Baton Rouge reached massive proportions as well. The Tigers drew an average home attendance of 100,742 at Tiger Stadium during this period. This season also marked a transitional era for the Southeastern Conference (SEC), serving as the final year for the Western Division before Texas and Oklahoma joined the conference in 2024. The venue for these matches was Tiger Stadium located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This era concluded just before major conference realignments occurred.
