In short: The 2024 Minnesota Vikings achieved a statistical anomaly that defies traditional sports logic. They became the first team in the Super Bowl era to record 14 wins and still fail to reach the divisional round, setting a record for the most wins by a team eliminated in the wild card.

The 2024 season was defined by a dramatic reversal of fortune. After losing starting quarterback Kirk Cousins to the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason, the Vikings entered a rebuilding year with low expectations. However, they defied the odds by starting 11–2—their best start since 2009—led by a stout defense and quarterback Sam Darnold. This run allowed them to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence, ultimately finishing with a 14–3 record.

The team's trajectory hit a bizarre wall in the final weeks. Despite reaching a 14–2 mark, they suffered two consecutive blowout losses to division rivals: the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams. These two games accounted for all four of the team's losses on the season. The loss to the Lions in Week 18 clinched the first seed for Detroit, while the subsequent loss to the Rams in the wild card round ended the Vikings' season.

This season created a unique historical footprint. A record was set by the Vikings as the initial NFL wild card squad to reach 14 victories. Additionally, they were the first franchise after the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers to suffer double-digit defeats in a single year before securing 14+ wins the following season. While they achieved their best regular-season record since 1998, their inability to advance past the first round remains a statistical outlier in modern football.

The season was also marked by logistical and aesthetic shifts. The team debuted the 'Winter Warrior' uniform, featuring the first white helmet in franchise history. Additionally, due to Southern California wildfires in January 2025, their wild card game against the Rams was moved from its original location to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
