The first franchise in NFL history to rebound from consecutive 1–4 starts
In short: After a devastating start to the 2024 season, the Los Angeles Rams achieved something unprecedented. Facing a wave of injuries and the retirement of a defensive legend, the team orchestrated a historic mid-season surge to claim the NFC West title.
The 2024 Los Angeles Rams season was defined by a historic statistical anomaly. For the first time in NFL history, a franchise began consecutive seasons with a 1–4 record and still managed to reach the playoffs. This feat followed a period of significant transition, most notably the March 15 retirement of defensive anchor Aaron Donald, marking the first time since 2013 that the roster lacked his presence. This era under head coach Sean McVay also marked the team's fifth stint playing home games at SoFi Stadium. The roster faced significant coaching changes, including the departure of defensive coordinator Raheem Morris to the Atlanta Falcons.
The season began in turmoil, with the team dropping to 0–2 following a 24–3 halftime deficit against the Cardinals. Injuries to vital offensive players, including Puka Nacua, contributed to a period where the Rams sat three games below .500. However, the trajectory shifted dramatically following their bye week. The roster found stability as key players returned, leading the team to win nine of their final twelve games. The early struggles were compounded by the loss of several offensive linemen to injury. Despite these setbacks, the team's defensive unit provided much-needed stability during their late-season resurgence.
By clinching the strength-of-victory tiebreaker, the Rams shared the NFC West crown with the Seattle Seahawks following their late-season surge. The playoff run included a dominant 27–9 victory over the No. 5 seed Minnesota Vikings, fueled by a four-touchdown performance from Matthew Stafford. While the season ultimately ended with a 28–22 loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round, the Rams' ability to navigate such extreme volatility remains a landmark achievement in league history.
