What Determines Draft Eligibility Beyond Graduation Year?
In short: The criteria for entering the NBA draft are surprisingly complex, involving age, prior contracts, and college status. It's not simply about being young; specific rules govern who can participate, even if they have already played professionally or graduated from high school.
Eligibility for the 2024 NBA draft was governed by established rules, requiring players to be at least 19 years old during that calendar year. For the 2024 cycle, this meant that any eligible player needed to have been born no later than December 31, 2005. Furthermore, players who did not automatically qualify had to formally declare their interest by submitting written notification to the NBA offices by April 27th.
The league has several pathways to automatic eligibility. One route is being at least 22 years old during the draft year, which means players born on or before December 31, 2002, were automatically included. Another path exists for those who signed a contract with a professional basketball team outside of the NBA within the United States and subsequently played under that agreement. Additionally, players who graduated from a U.S. high school but never attended a U.S. college, and for whom four years had passed since their graduation, qualified automatically.
NCAA players benefit from evolving regulations regarding their amateur status. Since the 2016 draft, declaring for the draft no longer automatically stripped a player of their college eligibility, provided they withdrew in a timely manner and did not sign outside of the NBA. Furthermore, NCAA athletes could now withdraw from the draft up to two times without losing eligibility, a significant change from previous NCAA standards.
The process of declaring and withdrawing is highly structured. For instance, NCAA players were granted a 10-day window after the NBA Draft Combine concluded to withdraw while retaining college eligibility. The league also manages the flow of information, as evidenced by the staggered invitation process for the 'green room'—the first wave of invites was reported on June 11th, followed by a second wave on June 15th, and a minor third wave on June 19th.
