How a lottery and a rookie award reshaped the 2024 MLB Draft
In short: In July 2024, the MLB Draft in Fort Worth, Texas, introduced several historic milestones. From a first-ever selection of an Australian player to unprecedented roster incentives, the process used complex rules to distribute amateur talent across the league.
The 2024 draft, held from July 14 to 16, was defined by several historical firsts. The Cleveland Guardians secured the top selection via a lottery held earlier in December 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee. With this win, the Guardians became the first team in history to hold the first overall pick. Their selection, Travis Bazzana, also marked the first time an Australian player was taken first overall and the first time a second baseman held the top spot.
The mechanics of the draft involve intricate rules designed to balance competition. While rounds two through 20 follow the reverse order of regular season winning percentage, the first round is more complex. The first six picks are determined by a lottery, while the rest of the first round is decided by a combination of postseason performance, revenue sharing status, and winning percentage. Notably, the Washington Nationals were barred from the lottery due to rules in the collective bargaining agreement preventing large-market teams from winning consecutive lottery picks.
Financial performance also dictates draft positioning. Teams like the Mets, Yankees, and Padres, which exceeded the 2023 surcharge tax threshold, saw their first-round picks pushed back by ten slots. Additionally, teams can earn 'Prospect Promotion Incentive Picks' based on rookie success. Both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Baltimore Orioles earned such picks following the 2023 Rookie of the Year wins by Corbin Carroll and Gunnar Henderson, respectively.
