How a tiebreaker denied the Seahawks a playoff spot despite double-digit wins
In short: The 2024 Seattle Seahawks season was defined by a jarring paradox. While they dominated on the road, they suffered their worst home record since 2008. This inconsistency left them caught in a statistical deadlock, missing the postseason via a tiebreaker for the second consecutive year.
The 2024 campaign marked a significant transitional period for the franchise. It was the team's 49th season in the NFL and their first under the leadership of head coach Mike Macdonald. This shift followed the departure of Pete Carroll, who and the team mutually agreed to part ways three days after the 2023 season ended. Under general manager John Schneider, who is now in his 15th season with the club, the team managed to improve their overall win record compared to the previous two years.
Despite this improvement, the season was characterized by extreme volatility in performance based on venue. The Seahawks were formidable on the road, posting a 7–1 record and sweeping their divisional road games. However, they struggled significantly at home, finishing with a 3–6 record—their poorest home performance since 2008. This inconsistency was compounded by a strong 8–5 start that was undermined by critical back-to-back losses against the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers.
The season's conclusion was defined by mathematical heartbreak. Despite matching the Los Angeles Rams' record for the NFC West crown, the Seahawks failed to reach the postseason because the Rams held the strength of victory advantage. This outcome was historically rare; the Seahawks became the first team to miss the playoffs with double-digit wins since the NFL expanded to a 17-game schedule, and the first to do so since the 2020 Miami Dolphins.
