A season of historic starts and a sudden, late-season collapse
In short: The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 campaign was a study in extremes. After an explosive 10–3 start that saw them tie an NFL record, a devastating four-game losing streak erased their division lead and ended their postseason hopes in a single afternoon.
The 202<0xC2>4 season began with remarkable efficiency for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Under general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin, the team achieved a 2–0 start for the first time since 2020, notably allowing just 16 points over those two games—their fewest in that span since 2007. For the first time since 1973, no opponent had scored more than 10 points against the Steelers by Week 3, marking a period of defensive supremacy.
This early momentum culminated in a historic milestone during Week 13. The Steelers secured their 21st straight season without a loss after beating the Cincinnati Bengals, matching the Dallas Cowboys' 1965–1985 NFL record. The offense also saw a resurgence in Week 13; Russell Wilson became the first Steelers quarterback to throw for 400 yards in a game since Ben Roethlisberger in 2018, as the team scored 40 or more points for the first time since October 2018.
However, the season's trajectory shifted violently in the final weeks. Despite reaching a 10–3 record, the Steelers suffered a late-season collapse, losing their final four games of the regular season. This slump caused them to lose the AFC North lead and finish with a 10–7 record, matching their previous year's total. Their postseason run ended abruptly in the Wild Card round with a 28–14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, marking their sixth consecutive appearance that ended in a single-game elimination.
