Texas enters a new era with a historic leap into the SEC
In short: The 2024 season marked a seismic shift for the Texas Longhorns. Moving into the Southeastern Conference for the first time, the program aimed to reclaim its status at the summit of college football, achieving a top ranking not seen in sixteen years and setting new records for professional talent.
The 2024 campaign represented a major structural transition for the University of Texas at Austin. Under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, the Longhorns officially joined the Southeastern Conference (SEC), a move that fundamentally altered their competitive landscape. This transition was met with immediate high-level recognition; by September 15, the team ascended to the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press poll, marking their first time holding that distinction since 2008.
Beyond the immediate prestige of conference realignment, the roster demonstrated significant depth and professional potential. Following the conclusion of the season, the program established a new benchmark for talent development, with twelve players selected in the 2025 NFL draft. This achievement set a new program record for the number of Longhorns entering the professional ranks in a single draft class.
The season's logistics were as complex as the competition. The Longhorns' schedule featured a mix of home games at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium and various away matchups. Notable non-conference fixtures included a high-stakes home-and-home series with Michigan, a matchup agreed upon in 2014 but rescheduled in 2023 to play at Michigan Stadium in 2024. The team also navigated a rigorous SEC slate, including high-profile rivalry games against Arkansas and Texas A&M.
The atmosphere in Austin remained electric throughout the season. Attendance figures reached historic levels, with a crowd of 102,850 marking the fifth-largest attendance in the history of Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium.
