How Gamba Osaka claimed their first AFC Champions League Two title
In short: In a tournament shaped by geopolitical shifts, Gamba Osaka secured a historic victory. Facing Al-Nassr at Riyadh's King Saud University Stadium, they triumphed 1–0 thanks to a decisive goal by Deniz Hümmet. This win marked the club's maiden title and earned them a spot in the elite tier.
The 2025–26 AFC Champions League Two, the 22nd edition of Asia's second-tier club football tournament, was defined by both sporting drama and regional instability. While the competition featured 32 teams in the group stage, the knockout progression faced significant disruption. Specifically, the West Region quarter-finals, originally slated for early March, had to be postponed due to the impacts of the 2026 Iran War. These fixtures were eventually rescheduled to be played as single-legged ties on 19 April.
The tournament structure relied on a complex allocation of slots based on club competition rankings. While the group stage draw occurred on 15 August 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, the knockout stage draw followed on 30 December 2025. The knockout format utilized a single-elimination structure for 16 teams, split by region. Most ties were played over two legs, with the exception of the final, which was a single match hosted by the West Region team on a rotation basis.
The path to the final was not without its complexities. The three winners from the preliminary stage joined 29 direct entrants in the group stage. The defending champions, Sharjah, failed to retain their crown due to their involvement in the AFC Champions League Elite league stage. Gamba Osaka's 1–0 win against Al-Nassr secured more than a trophy; it earned them a spot in the 2026–27 AFC Champions League Elite preliminary stage.
