How a new era of football is reshaping Azerbaijan's top league
In short: The 2025–26 Azerbaijan Premier League season marks a radical structural shift. With an expanded roster and a bold new economic model, the league is moving away from strict foreign player quotas toward a system that rewards domestic talent through strategic financial incentives.
The 34th season of Azerbaijan's premier football tier, officially known as the Misli Premyer Liqası, commenced on 15 August 2025. This campaign introduces significant changes to the league's composition, expanding the number of competing clubs from 10 to 12. Under this new format, each team will play 33 matches in total, facing every opponent three times throughout the season.
One of the most striking developments is the overhaul of player regulations. The league has abolished the previous quota on foreign players, but this freedom comes with a cost: a mandatory fee will now be levied on all international signings. In a clever use of circular economics, the revenue generated from these fees will be redistributed as financial bonuses to clubs that prioritize local players in their starting lineups. This mechanism aims to strengthen the domestic talent pool by making homegrown players a financial asset to the clubs.
The league's landscape is also seeing a period of intense movement. After an eight-year stint in the top flight, Sabail has faced relegation to the First Division. Conversely, the league welcomes several returning faces: Gabala returns after a one-year absence, while Imishli and Karvan return to the top tier following gaps of eighteen and sixteen years, respectively. The competition for survival remains high, as the 11th-placed team must defend its status in a neutral-venue play-off against the First League runner-up, while the bottom-ranked club faces automatic relegation.
