The Belgian Pro League is entering a high-stakes transitional era
In short: The 2025–26 Belgian Pro League season serves as a unique bridge to a massive structural expansion. With the league set to grow to 18 teams next year, the stakes for survival and promotion have been radically recalibrated, creating a high-pressure environment for every club involved.
The 2025–26 season marks the 123rd year of top-tier football in Belgium. It functions as a critical transition period because the league is scheduled to expand to 18 teams for the 2026–27 season. This expansion has fundamentally altered the traditional mechanics of relegation. For the current season, no teams will be automatically relegated after the play-offs; instead, only the last-placed team faces a promotion/relegation decider against the winner of the Challenger Pro League promotion play-offs.
The promotion landscape is particularly notable this year. Zulte Waregem returned to the top flight after just two seasons, while La Louvière made a historic debut in the top tier. While La Louvière is technically returning after a 19-year absence, this counts the predecessor RAA Louviéroise, as the club spent four seasons at the third level before folding.
The league employs a complex multi-stage play-off system to determine European qualification and survival. The Champions' Play-offs involve the top six teams starting with half their regular-season points (rounded up), while the Europe Play-offs involve teams ranked 7 through 12 under similar point-halving rules. These systems include specific tie-breaking nuances: for instance, Union SG and Anderlecht are ranked ahead of Club Brugge, Sint-Truiden, Gent, and Mechelen in the event of a tie because their points were rounded up.
The season's opening moment was captured on July 25, 2025, when Vincent Janssen of Antwerp scored the first goal against Union SG. Throughout the year, the league maintains a rigorous tracking system where goals and assists during the play-offs contribute to individual season totals, even though teams do not play an equal number of matches.
