From promotion by default to the pinnacle of Azerbaijani football
In short: In 2018, Sabah FK entered the top tier of Azerbaijani football not through direct promotion, but because the teams above them failed to secure licenses. Since that unexpected start, the Masazir-based club has transformed from a second-division newcomer into a domestic champion.
Founded on 8 September 2017, Sabah Futbol Klubu—which translates to 'Tomorrow Football Club'—began its journey in the Azerbaijan First Division. Their ascent to the Premier League was unconventional; although they finished 5th in the 2017–18 season, they were granted a license to join the top flight on 12 May 2018 after the four clubs ranked above them either declined or failed to meet promotion requirements.
The club's early years in the Premier League, which began in the 2018–19 season, were marked by significant managerial turnover. Between 2019 and 2021, the club saw a succession of leaders including Elshad Ahmadov, Željko Sopić, Vicente Gómez, and Ramin Guliyev. This period of transition eventually stabilized, leading to a historic era of domestic success.
The club reached its competitive zenith in the 2025–26 season. On 30 April 2026, Sabah secured its first-ever Premier League title following a defeat by Neftçi to the reigning champions, Qarabağ. They followed this with a 2–1 victory over Zira on 13 May 2026 to claim the Azerbaijan Cup. This period of dominance paved the way for their first qualification for the UEFA Champions League, achieved on 25 August 2026, after defeating Hapoel Be'er Sheva with a 6–4 aggregate score.
Based in Masazir, the club plays its home matches at the Bank Respublika Arena, a stadium with a capacity of 8,969. The club's identity is reflected in its black-pink colours and a badge featuring rays of sunshine within a shield.
