The final 82-game season before the NHL expands its schedule
In short: The 2025–26 NHL season marks a pivotal transition for professional hockey. As the 109th season of operation, it serves as the last regular season under the traditional 82-game format before a significant expansion to 84 games begins in 2026–27.
The season, which began on October 7, 2025, is defined by major structural and identity shifts. A significant mid-season break was scheduled in February to accommodate the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, marking the first time the league has participated in the Olympics since 2014. This participation also resulted in the cancellation of the 2026 All-Star Game, which was originally intended to be a send-off for players traveling from UBS Arena in New York to the Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Off the ice, the league's landscape is shifting through new identities and naming rights. The Utah Hockey Club officially transitioned to the Utah Mammoth during the off-season, following a public voting process that considered names like the Utah Wasatch and Utah Outlaws. Meanwhile, several arenas are undergoing rebranding, including Amalie Arena becoming Benchmark International Arena and the Wells Fargo Center becoming Xfinity Mobile Arena. In Buffalo, the Sabres are navigating lease complexities for the KeyBank Center, though they have secured naming rights through 2035–36.
The competitive landscape concludes with the Stanley Cup playoffs, which began in April 2026 and ended on June 14. In a decisive six-game series, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights to secure their second franchise Stanley Cup, their first since 2006. This season also saw the conclusion of the 2013 collective bargaining agreement, leading to a new four-year extension agreed upon on June 27, 2025, which will govern the league through the 2029–30 seasons.
