In short: The 2025–26 Super League marks a pivotal shift for Indonesian football. By expanding foreign player quotas and restructuring the league's competitive landscape, the nation is attempting to balance local identity with international standards. It is a season defined by high-stakes promotion, relegation, and a new era of squad building.

The 2025–26 season, also known as the BRI Super League for sponsorship reasons, represents the 16th season of Indonesia's top-flight football since its 2008 inception. This inaugural season of the 'Super League' branding began on August 8, 2025, and concluded on May 23, 2026. The calendar notably included a significant break from December 1 to December 19, 2025, to accommodate the SEA Games in Thailand.

A major structural change this season involves the foreign player quota. The league announced an increase to a maximum of 11 foreign players per club. Nevertheless, rigorous game-day rules exist: a maximum of nine overseas athletes may join the roster, limited to seven starters plus two substitutes. This mechanism seeks to manage the influx of international talent while maintaining the league's competitive integrity.

The league's composition saw significant movement. Out of 18 teams, three were promoted from Liga 2: Bhayangkara Presisi, PSIM, and Persijap. PSIM's return was particularly notable, marking their first appearance in the top tier in 18 years. Conversely, PSIS, PSS, and Barito Putera were relegated. PSIS ended a seven-season stay in the first tier, while Barito Putera's relegation marked their first absence from the top flight in 12 years.

Persib entered the season as the defending champions, having secured their third Liga 1 title and ninth overall top-flight title the previous year. The season also highlighted the commercial dynamics of the sport, with teams like Borneo navigating multi-product kit sponsorships and PSBS navigating a period without a sponsor until matchweek 9.
