Can Newcastle United maintain their Premier League momentum in the Champions League?
In short: Entering their 133rd season, Newcastle United faces a grueling schedule across domestic and European stages. With a high-stakes Champions League campaign and a global pre-season tour, the Magpies must balance intense competition in the FA Cup and EFL Cup against the demands of elite continental football.
The 2025–26 campaign marks Newcastle United's ninth straight year in the Premier League. A packed fixture list features domestic league fixtures plus the UEFA Champions League, EFL Cup, and FA Cup. This multi-front competition requires significant squad depth to navigate the various knockout stages and league phases.
In the Champions League, Newcastle's path includes a demanding league phase with home fixtures against Barcelona, Benfica, Athletic Bilbao, and PSV Eindhoven. Travel for away fixtures includes visits to Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille, and Union Saint-Gilloise. Following the league phase, they face Qarabağ in the knockout phase play-offs, with a high-profile round of 16 matchup against Barcelona scheduled for the home leg.
Domestic cup competitions present their own set of challenges. In the FA Cup, Newcastle enters at the third round, facing Bournemouth at home before an away trip to Aston Villa in the fourth round and a fifth-round home clash against Manchester City. The EFL Cup follows a similar pattern, starting in the third round against Bradford City, followed by home fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, and a semi-final two-legged tie against Manchester City.
To prepare for these rigors, the club has organized an extensive international pre-season. This itinerary features a trip to Singapore for Arsenal in the Festival of Football Tournament, a Scottish clash with Celtic, and a debut South Korean tour for the Coupang Play Series 2025 against Tottenham Hotspur and K League XI. Additionally, St James' Park will host the Sela Cup against Atlético Madrid on 2 June, with a second home friendly against Esponol also confirmed.
