How a single match decided the 2025–26 Greek football championship
In short: After a grueling season of high-stakes play-offs and new technological shifts, the Greek top flight reached a dramatic conclusion. One decisive victory on May 10, 2026, ended a multi-year drought for a historic club and reshaped the league's landscape.
The 2025–26 Super League Greece, known for sponsorship reasons as the Stoiximan Super League, was a landmark 90th season for the professional association. The campaign followed a complex two-phase structure: a 26-match regular season followed by specialized play-off groups. While Olympiacos entered the season as the defending champions with 48 titles, the ultimate glory went to AEK Athens. On May 10, 2026, AEK secured their 14th historical title by defeating Panathinaikos 2–1 during the fourth matchday of the Championship play-offs, marking their first championship since the 2022–23 season.
Technological precision played a significant role this year. Following a trial during the previous season's play-offs, the league saw its first full season of semi-automated offside technology. This innovation was not a temporary measure; clubs reached a unanimous agreement to continue using the technology for at least the next four championships.
The season was also defined by movement within the league hierarchy. Fourteen teams competed, including newcomers AEL, returning after a four-year absence, and A.E. Kifisia. Conversely, the season saw the relegation of Athens Kallithea after just one year, and the departure of Lamia, which fell to Super League 2 after an eight-year stay in the top division. The complex play-off system also determined European qualification, though the relevance of the Europe play-offs was nullified after OFI won the Greek Cup, securing a Europa League spot and shifting the qualification dynamics for the remaining top-tier clubs.
