How a 3–9 underdog transformed into a national champion in just two years
In short: Before 2025, Indiana held the distinction of having the most all-time losses in FBS football. Under head coach Curt Cignetti, the Hoosiers shattered that legacy, completing a historic turnaround that saw them rise from preseason sixth-place projections to the pinnacle of college football.
The 2025 Indiana Hoosiers season stands as a monumental shift in program history. Led by second-year head coach Curt Cignetti, the team achieved a perfect 12–0 regular season, surpassing their previous record of 11 wins. This success included a historic road victory against No. 3 Oregon in week 7 and a win at Penn State's Beaver Stadium. The team's dominance was punctuated by a Big Ten Championship victory over No. 1 Ohio State, their first win against the Buckeyes since 1988.
The momentum carried into the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. After receiving a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, Indiana secured a 38–3 victory over No. 9 Alabama in the Rose Bowl—their first Rose Bowl win. They followed this with a 56–22 win against the Oregon Ducks in the Peach Bowl, a game highlighted by quarterback Fernando Mendoza throwing five touchdown passes. Mendoza's performance was historic, as he became the first Hoosier to win the Heisman Trophy.
The campaign culminated on January 19, 2026, at Hard Rock Stadium, where Indiana defeated the Miami Hurricanes 27–21 to claim their first national championship. This achievement made them the first FBS team to reach a 16-win season since the 1894 Yale Bulldogs. Additionally, they became the first new team to win a national title since Florida in 1996, and the first Big Ten team to win a consensus title outside of Michigan, Ohio State, or Minnesota (since 1960).
This era of unprecedented success was built on a rapid ascent. Cignetti compiled an extraordinary 27–2 record during his first two seasons, taking a program that was just two years removed from a 3–9 record to the highest rankings in school history.
