The underdog program that defied every odd to reach the playoffs
In short: No one gave James Madison a chance. Only four years into the FBS, the Dukes bypassed traditional power structures to become a national threat. They didn't just participate in the 2025 season; they rewrote the script for what a mid-major program can achieve.
The 2025 James Madison Dukes football season culminated in a historic milestone: the program’s first appearance in the College Football Playoff. JMU's success is notable because they are the initial team to enter both the FCS playoffs and the College Football Playoff during the 2020s decade. Their rapid ascent has been characterized by University President Jim Schmidt as a "fairytale story," moving from an underdog status to a team that national pundits were forced to acknowledge.
The mechanics of this rise are rooted in what Athletics Director Matt Roan describes as a "power program" identity, rejecting the "mid-major" label. While they played their home games at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia—averaging 25,135 fans per game—the team's reach extended nationwide.
For their final game against Oregon at Autzen Stadium, thousands of supporters and members of the Marching Royal Dukes traveled to Eugene. Despite a 51-34 loss, the Dukes outperformed every other opponent that season in total yardage (509 yards) and managed zero turnovers. This trajectory matters because it validates a specific culture of growth. Former player Neal Wilkinson noted that while the facilities and stadium size are impressive, the "JMU Nation" identity is what drives the program's momentum. By securing 23 first downs and scoring 34 points against a top-ranked opponent, the team proved they could compete with elite programs, marking just one rung on their climb toward permanent national prominence.
