How the Miami Hurricanes reclaimed glory during their centennial season
In short: In their 100th anniversary year, the Miami Hurricanes defied the odds. Led by quarterback Carson Beck, the team navigated a rollercoaster season of high rankings and unexpected upsets to reach the College Football Playoff National Championship for the first time since 2002.
The 2025 season was a landmark year for the University of Miami, marking the 100th anniversary of the Hurricanes football program. Under the leadership of head coach Mario Cristobal, who was entering his fourth year, the team began with immense momentum. They secured their second consecutive 5–0 start, climbing to a No. 2 national ranking before a series of setbacks tested their resilience.
The Hurricanes' path was anything but smooth. Following an upset by Louisville and a 26–20 overtime loss to SMU, Miami slipped to No. 18 in the polls. However, they rallied to finish the regular season with four straight wins, ending 10–2 overall and 6–2 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. This performance earned them the tenth seed in the 2025–26 College Football Playoff.
Their postseason run was defined by significant upsets. After a low-scoring 10–3 victory over No. 7 Texas A&M, Miami faced the defending national champions, the Ohio State Buckeyes, in the Cotton Bowl. Despite being 9.5-point underdogs, the Hurricanes won 24–14, marking their first major bowl victory since the 2004 Orange Bowl. They followed this with a 31–27 Fiesta Bowl win against Ole Miss, secured by a late 3-yard touchdown scramble from Carson Beck.
The journey culminated in a National Championship appearance against Indiana. While they ultimately lost the title game, the season was historic: Miami became the first team to play for a national championship in their home stadium since the 1995 Orange Bowl, and the first to do so since the modern national championship game format was established.
