In short: In the late 1970s, the University of Miami considered dissolving its football program entirely. Instead, they hired Howard Schnellenberger, sparking a dynasty that would eventually secure five national titles and produce a parade of Hall of Fame legends.

The Miami Hurricanes football program has experienced dramatic highs and lows since its founding in 1926. The program's early years were marked by instability, including coaching changes and a 1926 hurricane that delayed its inaugural season. By the late 1970s, facing significant fiscal challenges, the university's board of trustees even debated reclassifying the program to Division I-AA or eliminating it altogether. However, the decision to persist led to one of the most decorated eras in college football history.

The program's golden era is defined by five AP national championships, secured in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, and 2001. This success placed Miami fifth on the all-time list of Associated Press National Poll Championships, trailing only Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Ohio State. The program has also become a prolific pipeline for professional talent, with eleven players inducted into the NFL's Pro Football Hall of Fame, including stars like Jim Kelly, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed.

Beyond the championships, the Hurricanes have built a massive footprint in the sport. They have compiled a record of 688–394–19 since 1926 and have appeared in 46 major bowl games. The program's history is also tied to iconic venues, having played at the Miami Orange Bowl for 71 years before moving to Hard Rock Stadium in 2008. Today, the program remains a cornerstone of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), continuing a legacy that began with a 7–0 victory over Rollins College in 1926.
