The high-stakes collapse of a powerhouse college football season
In short: LSU entered the 2025 season as a top-ten contender, boasting one of the largest home crowds in global sports. Yet, despite an early victory over a ranked opponent, the Tigers suffered a midseason implosion that led to a coaching firing and a disappointing bowl exit.
The 2025 LSU Tigers campaign was defined by extreme volatility. Starting the season ranked No. 9 in the preseason AP Poll, the team initially showed promise with a gritty 17–10 road win against No. 4 Clemson. However, this early success proved difficult to sustain as the roster struggled significantly with offensive consistency throughout the middle of the year. The Tigers competed as a member of the Southeastern Conference during this NCAA Division I FBS season.
The team's decline was marked by specific mechanical failures on the field: an ineffective run game and frequent turnovers in the passing attack. These issues were severe enough to warrant the benching of quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. The instability eventually reached the sidelines, resulting in the firing of head coach Brian Kelly on October 26, following a home defeat against Texas A&M. This midseason collapse happened after the team had already secured an early victory over a top-four opponent.
Following Kelly's departure, associate head coach and running backs coach Frank Wilson took over as interim head coach for the final stretch of the season. Despite these leadership changes, the Tigers were unable to regain their early-season momentum, ultimately concluding their campaign with a loss to Houston in the Texas Bowl. Wilson assumed leadership duties for the final games of the year. The Tigers' journey concluded with a defeat in the Magnolia Bowl against Ole Miss.
Even amidst the on-field struggles, LSU maintained its status as a massive commercial draw. The team averaged 101,575 fans per home game at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, a figure that ranked 7th highest of all American football teams worldwide during the season. These spectators gathered at Tiger Stadium located in Baton Rouge. This massive turnout highlights the program's enduring popularity despite the team's inconsistent performance.
