Can the Oklahoma Sooners navigate their high-stakes debut in the SEC?
In short: Entering their 131st season, the Oklahoma Sooners face a daunting transition into the Southeastern Conference. With preseason predictions placing them tenth, the team must prove they belong among the elite as they prepare for a grueling schedule and a historic rivalry matchup in Dallas.
The 2025 season marks a significant era for the University of Oklahoma as they compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) during their 131st year of football. Under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Brent Venables, the program is working to establish itself within one of college football's most competitive landscapes. Despite the challenges of this transition, the team maintains a massive following, drawing an average home attendance of 83,532 spectators at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman—the 13th-highest attendance in all of college football.
The road ahead is mathematically complex. The SEC and the university revealed a regular-season timetable on 11 December 2024, featuring seven games at home, four on the road, and one at a neutral site. The Sooners' home slate includes non-conference matchups against Illinois State, Michigan, and Kent State, alongside SEC conference opponents Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, and LSU. Conversely, they must travel to face Temple, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.
A centerpiece of the season is the 121st Red River Rivalry, where the Sooners will face Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. Despite the prestige of the program, preseason media polls suggest a difficult climb, with Oklahoma predicted to finish tenth in the SEC. While they secured three first-place votes, the team's postseason trajectory remains a point of intense scrutiny, highlighted by their involvement in the College Football Playoff first round against No. 9 Alabama.
