Ohio State faces a historic season in an expanded Big Ten landscape
In short: The 2025 Buckeyes season marks a significant era for the program. As the Big Ten expands to 18 teams, Ohio State faces a schedule featuring a massive season opener against Texas and a rare trip to Seattle. This season promises high-stakes matchups and record-breaking viewership potential.
The 2025 season represents the 136th overall for the Buckeyes and their 113th as members of the Big Ten. The conference has expanded to an 18-team format, a structure that dictates a new scheduling rhythm. Under head coach Ryan Day, the team is set to play seven home games at Ohio Stadium, including a highly anticipated season opener against Texas on August 30. This campaign marks the program's second year within the newly enlarged conference. Ryan Day continues his tenure as the team's seventh-year head coach.
The schedule includes several notable milestones. The Buckeyes will host Grambling State University for the first time ever and will face Ohio University for the first time since 2010. Additionally, the team will make its first trip to Seattle since 2007 to face Washington on September 27. The season also features a return to Champaign, Illinois, for the first time in a decade. The roster has seen significant movement, with ten new players arriving via the transfer portal. Conversely, the squad lost 17 players through the same mechanism.
The stakes for the conference are high, with the 18 teams competing for a spot in the Big Ten championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 6. The winner of that matchup earns automatic entry into the College Football Playoffs. For Ohio State, the path includes key conference road trips to Purdue, Wisconsin, and their traditional rival, Michigan, on November 29. The regular season concludes with a high-profile clash against Michigan. This matchup serves as the final game before the postseason begins.
