The 2025 Blue Jays reached the World Series for the first time since 1993
In short: After a one-year absence from the postseason, the Toronto Blue Jays orchestrated a historic turnaround. They clinched the AL East title in a dramatic head-to-head tiebreaker and marched to the World Series, only to face a heartbreaking extra-innings defeat in the final game of the year.
The 2025 season was defined by a dramatic shift in momentum. The Blue Jays clinched a playoff spot on 21 September, defeating the Kansas City Royals 8–5 to conclude a 74–88 season. This comeback culminated in a thrilling regular-season finale where they clinched the American League East division title over the New York Yankees. Despite finishing with a tied overall win total, the Jays secured the division by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker, winning the series 8–5 and earning home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The team's path to the World Series was paved by high-stakes transactions and record-breaking performances. Management actively sought new players, acquiring 3-year, $33 million closer Jeff Hoffman and a one-year, $15.5 million agreement with veteran Max Scherzer. They also secured the largest contract in franchise history: a 14-year, $500 million extension for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. On the field, the team set a franchise record by winning 11 straight home games in July and established an MLB record by recording 63 hits in a single three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.
The championship run ended in a grueling seven-game American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Seattle Mariners, followed by a World Series appearance against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. While the Blue Jays reached the ultimate stage for the first time since 1993, they suffered their first-ever World Series loss in franchise history. The final game went into extra innings at home, marking a bittersweet conclusion to a season that saw them return to the pinnacle of baseball.
