The most-watched opening game in college football history
In short: When the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns met Ohio State in 2025, they didn't just create a historic matchup; they shattered viewership records. This collision of titans set the stage for a season defined by high-stakes gambles and massive crowds.
The 2025 season began with a monumental cultural moment: the first time in history that the No. 1 and No. 2 teams faced each other in Week 1. Texas entered as the consensus preseason favorite, facing off against Ohio State on August 30. The spectacle was so massive it drew 16.1 million viewers, establishing a new record for the most-watched opening game in college football history.
The narrative of the season was shaped by aggressive coaching and high-pressure decisions. Under fifth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, Texas faced an Ohio State team that had defeated them 28-14 in the previous year's Cotton Bowl Playoff Semifinal. Despite a scoreless first quarter and several drives into territory, Texas repeatedly elected to go for it on fourth downs—including critical attempts from the 1-yardline and the 9-yardline—failing to convert each time.
While the season opener ended in a 14–7 loss that knocked Texas out of the College Football Playoff (following subsequent losses to Florida and Georgia), the team remained a powerhouse. They finished with a 10–3 overall record, securing a three-way tie for fifth in the SEC. Their dominance was reflected in their home presence at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, where they averaged an attendance of 102,367—the fifth-highest in the nation.
The season concluded with a victory over Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Despite the early setbacks, the Longhorns maintained a core of continuity, returning 11 starters from the previous year to anchor their transition into the SEC landscape.
