A historic season defined by defensive vulnerability and offensive dominance
In short: The 2025 Texas Tech Red Raiders achieved a statistical paradox: they secured their first-ever Big 12 title while simultaneously ranking near the bottom of the nation in defensive efficiency. It was a season of extremes, marked by record-breaking wins and a passing defense that left opponents wide open.
Under fourth-year head coach Joey McGuire, the 2025 Red Raiders orchestrated one of the most unique campaigns in school history. The team reached the pinnacle of their conference by defeating BYU 34–7 in the Big 12 Championship Game. This victory secured the program's first-ever Big 12 title and its first outright conference championship since sharing a Southwest Conference title in 1955. The win also set a new school record for the most victories in a single season, totaling 12 wins.
The team's success was characterized by overwhelming margins of victory; every one of their 12 regular-season wins, plus the championship game, saw them win by more than three touchdowns. However, this dominance came at a cost to defensive integrity. Averaging 305.3 yards conceded every match, the Big 12's least effective passing defence belonged to the Red Raiders at season's end. This figure ranked as the second-most allowed in all of FBS football, trailing only Tulsa.
The season's conclusion saw a flurry of coaching changes following the championship run. Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter and secondary coach Marcel Yates were fired on December 1, 2024, while offensive coordinator Zach Kittley departed for Florida Atlantic. The program moved quickly to restructure, hiring Shiel Wood as defensive coordinator on December 4 and Mack Leftwich as offensive coordinator on December 6. Despite the high-octane offense that propelled them to an Orange Bowl berth, the team ultimately fell to Oregon in the playoffs.
Logistically, the team maintained a strong home presence at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, drawing an average attendance of 60,143. Even amidst extreme weather—including a thunderstorm that forced a game to be suspended and resumed with two eight-minute quarters—the Red Raiders remained a focal point of Big 12 attention.
