A new era begins for France's third football division

The 2026–27 campaign represents a historical milestone for the French third tier. For the first time, the division will officially adopt the name Ligue 3. This change is driven by sponsorship agreements with Betclic, which will see the league compete under the title Ligue 3 Betclic from 2026 onwards. This season also marks the 34th year since the league's establishment.
The composition of the league for this season tells a story of both long-awaited returns and fresh arrivals. Clubs such as La Roche and Cannes are returning to the third division after significant periods away—thirteen and twelve years, respectively. Meanwhile, Thionville makes its debut, entering the league for the very first time. In contrast, the division sees the arrival of Bastia and Amiens, who have been relegated following five and six years in Ligue 2.
The structure of the competition remains a high-stakes battle for eighteen clubs playing a 34-game home-and-away schedule. The path to the second tier is narrow: only the top two teams secure automatic promotion to Ligue 2. The teams finishing between third and sixth place must navigate a promotion play-off tournament. The ultimate winner of these play-offs then faces a final, two-legged challenge against the 16th-placed side from Ligue 2 to determine who stays up or moves up. At the bottom, the pressure is equally intense, as the three lowest-placed clubs face relegation.
