The 2026–27 NBL season marks nearly half a century of Australian basketball
In short: Basketball in Australia is entering a milestone era. As the league prepares for its 49th season, it balances a grueling regular schedule with high-stakes international obligations and a revamped finals structure designed to heighten the drama of every remaining possession.
The 2026–27 National Basketball League (NBL) season serves as a significant milestone for the sport in Australia, marking its 49th year since the league's inception in 1979. This upcoming campaign will feature ten teams, all of whom are returning from the previous 2025–26 season. The schedule is meticulously structured to accommodate both domestic competition and international duties, specifically pausing for FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification windows in late 2026 and early 2027. Every single team from the prior year will participate. The league pauses for two specific international windows. These breaks occur in November 2026 and February 2027.
The regular season is set to be a marathon of endurance, consisting of 165 total games divided into 21 rounds. This means each team will play exactly 33 games between the opening tip-off on September 19, 2026, and the final regular-season game on February 14, 2027. A key highlight of the early calendar is the NBL Blitz, a concentrated period of competition held at Bendigo Stadium from September 2 to September 6, 2026. Pre-season play starts on August 6, 2026. This period concludes by September 12, 2026. The Blitz takes place in Bendigo.
The league is also refining its postseason architecture. While the Ignite Cup will feature a new four-team finals format with semifinals, the primary NBL Finals in March 2027 will utilize a complex seeding system. The top two seeds earn automatic semifinal berths, while teams ranked three through six must fight through a play-in tournament. The championship itself will be a best-of-five series where the higher seed maintains home-court advantage for games one, three, and five. The semifinals consist of best-of-three series. Play-in games determine the final two spots. Seed three faces seed four first.
