Can the New Mexico Lobos maintain their momentum as Mountain West favorites?
In short: After a decade of struggle, the New Mexico Lobos have emerged as a sudden powerhouse. Following a breakout 2025 season, the program enters 2026 with high expectations and a preseason prediction that has the entire conference taking notice.
The University of New Mexico football program is currently navigating a significant period of resurgence. After years of middling performances, the 2025 campaign served as a pivotal turning point for the Lobos. Under the leadership of head coach Jason Eck, the team achieved a 9–4 record, marking the program's first nine-win season since 2007. This success also secured the team's first bowl appearance since 2016, signaling a departure from the recent era of stagnation. The program continues to compete as a member of the Mountain West Conference. This resurgence is centered around their home matches played at University Stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As the team prepares for the 2026 NCAA Division I FBS season, the atmosphere in Albuquerque is one of cautious optimism. According to the yearly media poll, the Lobos are tipped to clinch the Mountain West Conference title this upcoming season. This high ranking is driven by the roster's ability to retain key contributors from the previous year's successful squad, providing a foundation of continuity that is often rare in college football transitions.
While the prestige of being a preseason favorite is significant, the true test for Eck's second year will be sustaining this level of play within the competitive Mountain West landscape. The program's ability to replicate the turnaround seen in 2025 will determine whether this recent success is a fleeting moment or the start of a new era for the Lobos at University Stadium.
