The historic season where a team lost to every single opponent
In short: Imagine a sports season so statistically improbable that it becomes a historical anomaly. In 2024, the Chicago White Sox achieved a feat never before seen in Major League Baseball: they managed to lose at least one game against every single one of the other 29 teams in the league.
The 2024 Chicago White Sox season stands as a landmark of futility in modern baseball. The team began the year with a disastrous 3–22 record, the poorest start in franchise history and tying the worst start in the wild card era. A record for the most defeats prior to the All-Star break was set by the team on July 14, when their total reached 71. This record stood until the following year when the Colorado Rockies reached 74 losses.
The season was defined by unprecedented losing streaks. The White Sox set a franchise record for 14 consecutive losses in June, followed by a 21-game losing streak in August—the first time since 1988 that a team endured such a stretch. They also became the first team since 2021 to endure two separate losing streaks of 14 games or more. The 1962 New York Mets were eclipsed for the most modern MLB losses when the squad hit 121 on September 27.
Beyond the raw numbers, the season reached a unique statistical milestone on September 20. After an 118th loss to the San Diego Padres, the White Sox became the first team in MLB history to lose at least once against all 29 other teams in a single season. This era of struggle saw the team move through various leadership changes, including the dismissal of manager Pedro Grifol in August and the appointment of Grady Sizemore as interim manager, who oversaw the final stretch of the 41–121 campaign.
