Can a Republican break Michigan's long-standing Democratic hold on the governor's office?
In short: With incumbent Gretchen Whitmer ineligible for a third term, the 2026 Michigan gubernatorial race has become a high-stakes battleground. As Democrats have held all statewide offices since 2018, the upcoming election tests whether the Republican nominee can reclaim a seat the party hasn't held since 2014.
On 3 November 2026, voters will choose between Republican U.S. Representative John James and Democrat Jocelyn Benson, the Secretary of State. Representative John James. Benson secured the Democratic nomination in the August 4 primary with 83.2% of the vote, defeating Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. James, endorsed by Donald Trump, won the Republican primary with 50.1% of the vote, overcoming businessman Perry Johnson.
The political landscape in Michigan is notably volatile. While the state was a Democratic stronghold from 1992 until 2016, recent presidential results show a shifting electorate. Joe Biden won the state by 2.78% in 2020, but Donald Trump flipped it in 2024 with a 1.42% margin, a shift attributed to changes in working-class and Arab American voter support.
The contest arrives at a moment of significant partisan division in the state legislature. Since 2024, Republicans have held a narrow majority in the Michigan House, while Democrats maintain a narrow majority in the State Senate. Despite the competitive environment, Democratic Governor Whitmer entered late 2026 with a strong net +26 approval rating, according to Morning Consult.
The Republican side faces internal complications. Libertarian nominee Anthony Hudson was formally disavowed by his party in September 2026 due to ideological contradictions. Furthermore, his running mate, Beau Parmenter, faced legal scrutiny following an arrest in September 2026 for a felony larceny charge related to an incident in May 2025.
