Why the 2026 Rugby League World Cup is shrinking to stay competitive
In short: Originally scheduled for 2025, the seventeenth Men's Rugby League World Cup has undergone a massive overhaul. From hosting shifts to a significant reduction in participating teams, the tournament's path to 2026 has been anything but smooth, sparking intense debate over the future of the sport's global growth.
The 2026 Men's Rugby League World Cup was originally intended for October and November 2025, but the schedule was shifted following France's withdrawal as host. After the International Rugby League (IRL) lost hosting rights for the United States and Canada in December 2019 due to promoter issues, France was awarded the rights. However, on 15 May 2023, the French organizing committee withdrew because of financial concerns from the government elected in May 2022. Consequently, the tournament was moved to 2026 and relocated to the Southern Hemisphere, with Australia confirmed as the host on 24 July 2024, including matches in Papua New Guinea.
A major point of contention is the tournament's structure. The field has been reduced from 16 teams to just 10, mirroring the 16-team editions of 1995 and 2008. The IRL justifies this reduction by citing the 'significant cost' and lack of 'commercial benefits' brought by lower-ranked nations during the 2021 tournament, aiming instead to prevent blowout scorelines and increase competitiveness. This move, however, has faced heavy criticism. On 22 August 2023, 16 member associations signed a letter protesting the reduction and the ban on affiliate members, arguing it would stifle the sport's growth in developing nations.
The tournament will run in parallel with the women's and wheelchair editions, though the ban on affiliate members does not apply to those competitions. The 2026 event will feature a unique group format: one group of four and two groups of three. The top two teams from Group A will advance to the semi-finals, while the top two from Group B and Group C will also progress. The opening match is set for 15 October at the Sydney Football Stadium, featuring Australia against New Zealand.
