In short: In a span of just four games, Bob Chesney has orchestrated one of the most successful season openings in modern UCLA history. By securing an undefeated start, he has joined an elite group of coaches who have mastered the art of immediate dominance on the gridiron.

The 2026 UCLA Bruins football team entered its 107th season as a member of the Big Ten Conference, marking only their third year in the powerhouse league. Under first-year head coach Bob Chesney, the program experienced an immediate surge of momentum. By reaching a 4–0 record, Chesney became only the second head coach in school history to achieve such a feat, joining Red Sanders who accomplished the same milestone back in 1949.

The team's success was anchored by a dominant rushing attack and defensive opportunism. Running back Wayne Knight emerged as a primary catalyst, scoring three touchdowns in multiple early games and earning Paul Hornung Award Player of the Week honors on September 9 and September 22. The Bruins also showcased offensive diversity with quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who threw for 276 yards and three touchdowns during a 52–28 victory over Purdue.

Defensively, the Bruins were equally impactful. Safety Ta’Shawn James played a pivotal role in several victories, including recording two interceptions against California and earning Thorpe Award Defensive Back of the Week honors. During a 54–3 victory, the Bruins' defense grabbed four Malik Washington interceptions, taking two back for scores. This early success mirrors the 1976 and 2012 seasons, where coaches Terry Donahue and Jim Mora also began their tenures with three consecutive wins.

Playing their home games at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Bruins established a trend of defensive resilience. In their home opener against San Diego State, they held opponents scoreless until just over 20 minutes remaining in the game. This rapid ascent to the top of the standings highlights a significant shift in the program's trajectory as it navigates its new conference identity.
