Finland's top-tier football prepares for its ninety-sixth season of competition
In short: The 2026 Veikkausliiga is set to kick off, marking nearly a century of elite Finnish football. As the league expands its narrative, the field is shifting with new challengers rising from the Ykkösliiga and established giants fighting to maintain their dominance in the top flight.
The 2026 Veikkausliiga represents the 96th season of Finland's premier football division. Scheduled to run from April through November, the league is supported by its primary sponsor, Veikkaus. This upcoming campaign features a twelve-team roster, a structure that balances continuity with the inevitable volatility of professional sports promotion and relegation.
The composition of the league reveals a significant shift in the hierarchy. Ten teams return from the previous season, including the defending champions, KuPS. However, the landscape is altered by two newcomers from the Ykkösliiga. FC Lahti joins the top flight after a brief, single-season absence, while TPS returns to the highest level following a five-year hiatus after winning the 2025 play-offs.
These arrivals come at the expense of two relegated sides. FC Haka exits the top tier after a six-year tenure, having finished at the bottom of the 2025 standings. They are joined in relegation by KTP, who drop down after a single season in the top flight following their defeat in the Veikkausliiga play-offs. This constant movement underscores the high stakes of the Finnish football pyramid.
Beyond the pitch, the league maintains strict branding and eligibility standards. Every participating team is required to display the Veikkausliiga logo on the right sleeve of their jerseys. Additionally, while players and managers may hold multiple non-FIFA nationalities, the league adheres to specific FIFA eligibility rules for representing national teams.
